UDOT Tests New Interstate Markings

Release date: 10/16/2008

Utah can be added to the list of state DOTs who are either experimenting with or implementing the use of PreMark® Interstate Shields into their pavement marking program. UDOT spokesman Adan Carrillo explains in a recent interview with KSL-TV regarding the road (surface) signs especially for out-of-state travelers, “They’re not familiar with our highway system. They want to make sure that they make the right decision so they don’t have to turn around. We just decided to increase the signage in that area to help them out that way.” The interstate shield surface signage is being used in conjunction with the more familiar 8-foot FHWA word legends such as “SOUTH” and “EAST” to provide further clarification within a driver’s line of sight while traveling on a busy highway.

UDOT wants to see how the surface signage will hold up to one of Utah’s rugged winters. The current plan is to use them throughout the state. Surviving tough wear and tear isn’t anything new to PreMark® preformed thermoplastic pavement markings. In fact, PreMark® is designed as a true intersection-grade pavement marking that can withstand heavy turning traffic typically found at busy intersections. To date there are hundreds of PreMark® Interstate Shields used across the country in states including but not limited to Texas, West Virginia, New York, Maryland, Nevada, Maine, Colorado, and North Carolina.

Each PreMark® Interstate Shield Marking includes ViziGrip® which provides enhanced visibility and extra skid resistance for safety especially in wet conditions. Application is simple with a propane heat torch or a large infrared heater. PreMark® Interstate Shields are available in the standard FHWA sizes as well as custom sizes that can vary depending on speed limits and location of the marking.
